About running vests
For runs under 45 minutes, a handheld bottle is usually fine. But once you are out for an hour or more, a running vest changes everything. Instead of gripping a bottle, fighting a bouncing belt, or stopping at water stations, you have your hydration and all your essentials — phone, keys, gels — right where you need them, without thinking about it. Most runners who try a vest for the first time say they wish they had switched sooner.
There's no hard rule on distance, it's more about how you like to run. If you hate carrying things, get annoyed by bouncing pockets, or just want your hands free, a vest makes sense from your very first 5K. Plenty of Real Risk customers wear theirs for parkrun and Couch to 5K. For longer distances like 10K, half marathons and beyond, it becomes even more valuable because you can carry water and fuel without depending on aid stations. Basically, if carrying stuff bothers you on a run — any run — the UltraX will fix that.
Plenty of runners at the Dublin Marathon and other Irish road races wear vests, and for good reason. You get consistent hydration on your own terms, easy access to gels without fumbling, and no dependency on aid station timing. If you have been training with the UltraX, race day is just another run — no surprises, no cramping hands, no wasted time at stations. The golden rule is: never wear anything new on race day. Train with it first.
A running belt works fine for short runs when you just need your phone and a key. But for anything beyond 45 minutes, a vest wins. The weight is spread across your shoulders and chest rather than sitting on your waist, so there is no bounce, no slipping, and no digging into your hips. For Irish conditions — longer training runs, changeable weather, carrying a gel or two — a vest is the more practical and comfortable choice. That said, both serve a purpose and many runners own both.
Not if it fits properly. Bounce is caused by a vest that is too loose. The UltraX has dual adjustable straps at the chest and waist so you can dial in an exact fit for your body. Once set, it moves with you rather than on you. Our runners consistently say this is the first thing they notice — they forget they are wearing it within the first kilometre. If you are between sizes, size up and use the straps to tighten.
A well-fitted vest should not chafe at all. Chafing usually happens when a vest is too loose and shifts during the run, or when the fabric is rough. The UltraX is made from a soft neoprene and nylon blend designed specifically to sit against the body without rubbing. The key is fit — use the adjustment straps to make it snug but not tight. We also recommend testing it on a shorter run before wearing it for long distances.
About the UltraX
The UltraX is designed to hold everything you need for a training run or race day. The front chest pocket holds your included 500ml soft flask, with additional pockets for your phone, keys, airpods, gels, and cards. Everything is accessible on the move — no stopping, no fumbling. Even when fully loaded, the pockets sit flush against the vest so there is no pulling or distortion.
Yes. The UltraX is a unisex design with dual adjustment straps that allow it to fit a wide range of body shapes. We offer two size ranges — XS to S and M to L — and the adjustable chest and waist straps mean it adapts to your specific build rather than a one-size assumption. We have many female runners using the vest for half marathon and marathon training with excellent feedback on fit and comfort.
Use your chest measurement to choose your size. XS-S covers 61cm to 81cm and M-L covers 81cm to 112cm. If you are right on the boundary, size up — the adjustment straps will bring the fit in. The vest should feel snug when adjusted, with no movement when you jump or jog. If you order and the size is not right, we offer free returns and exchanges within 30 days, so there is no risk.
Every UltraX order includes the running vest itself and a free 500ml soft flask — everything you need to get out the door on your first run. The soft flask fits directly into the front chest pocket and is sized for easy access mid-run.
Care and use
Hand washing is recommended to keep the materials in the best condition. Fill a basin with lukewarm water and a small amount of mild, scent-free detergent. Gently work the vest through the water, paying attention to the straps and pockets, then rinse thoroughly and hang to air dry. Do not tumble dry, iron, or bleach. After every run, give the vest a rinse and let it air out fully before storing — this prevents odour build-up.
Absolutely. The neoprene and nylon blend handles wet, cold, and changeable Irish weather without issue. The material does not absorb water and dries quickly. In colder conditions, wear the vest over a long-sleeve base layer — the adjustment straps accommodate the extra layer without losing a secure fit. Many of our customers run year-round with the UltraX through Irish winters, including in rain, wind, and the odd frost.
